And doing this should not hurt the engine in any way. Your going to have to use the breaks anyway so you should not get anynore wear and tear from this. On the other hand using the engine to slow the car is not good over time. When downshifting you should apply the breaks enough so that the RPM's are at a low enough level and then you select a lower gear. Simply downshifting from 5th to 4th (as an example) without applying the proper amount of breaking will result in the engine and cluth wearing faster.
